Maoists are at it again

As the country is going through the long and arduous journey to stability and peace (hopefully), Maoists are putting forth their 22 point pre condition before the constitutional essembly election. they have plans to launch agitation in parliament, government and the streets. here are some of their conditions:

  • announcement of republic before the polls,

ok, this conditions needs a lot of preconditions. first up: do the politicians understand what is it to become a republic and what kind of republice. we dont want to do the same mistake we did announcing Nepal as a Secular state. (i have no issue being secular, but the process was well, too rash in my opinion)

  • formation of an inquiry commission on involuntary disappearances,

ok, i agree with that. there are thousands of ppl who dissapeared both due to maoists and the army and we need to start the investigation, yestarday.

  • roundtable conference of all sections of the society including Janajatis and Madhesis,

ok, when we say all sections of society, it is too broad. yes we need to educate everybody of the changes that the election is going to bring. a round table, well we might need a big table and a different strategy to go about it.

  • release of political detainees,

this also needs further explanations, who are these detainees and there has to be due process rather than just realease. bottom line we need a proper, RULE OF LAW.

  • start of the process for integrating the People's Liberation Army within the Nepali Army by forming a special cabinet committee,

this is another tricky one, how do you begin. probably they are both trained the same way, but integration would be difficult. one day u are killing one another and next you are all working together. i am no security expert but i dont think its a simple thing to achjieve.

  • withdrawal of army from the royal palace,

i am not for or against the royal family, but the palace is part of our heritage we do want it protected, like any other historical sight.

  • start the process of nationalising the properties of late King Birendra and also the properties of King Gyanandra which he acquired as the monarch.

this is a long process as well and i like it that they only say starting the process. if we are not going to have a monarchy we got to nationalize the properties, but have we decided not to have the monarchy yet. i belive that ppl should be asked to vote for it.

well thats some of their conditions, not bad actually, but no need to disrupt the economy with bundhs and general life in the country by strikes and all. i think we have had enough of it and seriously too much of anything is not affective. We need to think of more non-violent ways of making the government listen to the ppl, for some reason we only use the bandhs and strikes. what are other ways??

Thai boxing!!

This weekend we decided to go watch Muay Thai or thai boxing, it was free in Channel 7 studio, so we thought, why not. As we were foreigners, we were given almost front row seats. Some perks of being a tourist :)

Bourne Ultimatum

What an awsome movie, a great end for the trilogy. but u never know, there might be a Re-bourne or bourne reloaded coming next fall!! though the camera work was shaky and give you motion sickness at times, it gave a real time experience. it felt like we were running with Jason Bourne, and the suspence was good too. good actors, great action and awsome direction. 5 stars in my book. one of the best movies this summer.

What is going on in Nepal!!

Everyday, we read about strikes, bandhs, chakka jam, violence on and on and on. it is very frustrating and sad. but as i always tell myslef and others, every country has to go though these times to reach development. "Rome was not built in a day". here is another news about lack of freedom of speech.
-------------------------------------
US, UK and NBA express concern over disruption in THT/AP and Radio HBC

British and the US embassies in Kathmandu have expressed serious concern over the disruption of publication of The Himalayan Times (THT) and the Annapurna Post (AP).
"Intimidation against free media undermines democracy by suppressing free speech. Maoist union-affiliated activities against these newspapers directly contradict claims by their leaders to support democracy and free media. The freedom of speech is critical to the holding of free and fair elections in November," a statement by the US embassy stated on Tuesday.

Similarly, the British embassy stated that 'free media are the life-blood of healthy democracy and media houses must be allowed to function without intimidation and interference."
The statement added the industrial dispute should be peacefully resolved through normal dispute resolution mechanism, not by forcibly preventing production or distribution. "This harms democracy by denying people the right to information. UK urges all involved to behave responsibly," it adds.

In the meantime, Nepal Bar Association (NBA) on Tuesday condemned the attack on free press from various sectors.

The national body of lawyers termed the current disruption on newspapers and FM stations as a threat on independent press, which is in gross violation of people's right to information guaranteed by the Interim Constitution.

In a statement, NBA said, "NBA calls all concerned not to interfere in the freedom of press and wants to draw attention of the government to create a positive environment for the media to work freely."

GRACE

By Alice Walker: " Absolute Trust in the Goodness of the Earth"

Grace
Gives me a day
Too beautiful
I had thought
To stay indoors
& yet
washing my dishes
Straightening
My shelves
Finally
throwing out
The wilted
Onions
Shrunken Garlic
Cloves
I discover
I am happy
To be inside
Looking out
This, I think
Is wealth
Just this choosing
of how
A beautiful day
Is spent

What qualifies one as a Visionary??

Very interesting debate for sure. just watched a documentary in BBC world. they are having and online debate on it and has put Madonna as a pop visionary along side Warhol. So for September they have debate going on between
Leonardo Da Vinci v Andy Warhol (tbc)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart v Madonna
Charles Dickens v J.K. Rowling
Thomas Edison v Tim Berners Lee
Christopher Wren v Norman Foster

This must be interesting, to actually measure these people and i wonder what kind of criteria they use. i think the one they should use is visionary and their media appeal. i think media and connections have a lot to do with making an idea into a visionary and an inventor into a visionary.

Visionaries adjective 1 thinking about the future with imagination or wisdom. • noun (pl. visionaries) a visionary person. Source: Oxford English Dictionary
